NHL OLD STARS
by
Randy Steinman

Thirty-five is usually the age when rec league hockey players start playing "Oldtimers" hockey. It's not too common that players of that age- and older- star or contribute greatly at the NHL level. Following is a list of players over 35 years of age who are still performing at a very high level in the NHL. (Age as Oct.1/17)

Wouldn't any of these players make the perfect "ringer" for your Oldtimers or pickup hockey team?

-***JAROMIR JAGR, CALGARY, RW (45)
Jagr was waived by the Flames and is now playing in Czechoslovakia. The oldest of the "Old Stars" turns 46 on Feb.15. Jagr scored 766 goals and 1155 assists for 1921 points in his NHL career. These totals would be even greater had he not gone to the KHL for three years.

-DANIEL SEDIN, VANCOUVER, LW (36) & HENRIK SEDIN, VANCOUVER, C (37)
Swedish twins have been a fixture on Canucks roster for 17 years.

-JOE THORNTON, SAN JOSE, C (38)
A great playmaker, Thornton passed the 1,000 assist mark in 2016-17 and is currently just four goals shy of 400 for his career.

-PATRICK MARLEAU, TORONTO LW/C (38)
Spedy forward has 523 goals and 583 assists in his NHL career.

-HENRIK ZETTERBERG, DETROIT, C (36)
Red Wings leader is in 15th year with club.

-ZDENO CHARA, BOSTON, D (40)
The imposing blueliner (6-9,250lbs.) is still a major piece of the Boston defense and provides important tutelage to young Bruin D-men including Brandon Carlo and Charlie McAvoy.

-NIKLAS KRONWALL, DETROIT, D (36)
Hard-hitting Swede is in his 14th year with Red Wings.

-ROBERTO LUONGO, FLORIDA, G (38)
Oldest #1 goalie in the NHL until suffering an early season injury in 2017-18.
