Looking for a hockey flick? I mean a movie where hockey is central to the plot and where hockey action is shown- whether it is authentic-looking or not. SLAPSHOT (1977) MYSTERY, ALASKA (1999) YOUNGBLOOD (1986) MIRACLE (2004) MIRACLE ON ICE (1981) THE DEADLIEST SEASON (1977) NET WORTH (1995) GROSS MISCONDUCT (1993) FACEOFF (1971) SLAPSHOT 2- BREAKING THE ICE (2002) THE ROCKET (2005) SLAPSHOT 3- THE JUNIOR LEAGUE (2008) GOON (2011) GOON- LAST OF THE ENFORCERS (2017)
So without further ado, here are capsule summaries of some hockey movies (some good, some bad) for your consideration:
The hockey movie by which all other hockey movies are measured.
Paul Newman portrays Reg Dunlop, an aging star leading the Charlestown Chiefs. The language is bluer than the blueline.
The Hanson Brothers supply many comic antics and there's even an on-ice striptease courtesy of Michael Ontkean.
Cast includes: Paul Newman, Michael Ontkean, Jennifer Warren, Lindsay Crouse, Jerry Houser, Melinda Dillon, Strother Martin and Andrew Duggan.
If you have one hockey movie in your collection this one should be it.
The New York Rangers fly in for an exhibition game against a smalltown Alaskan squad.
Cast includes: Russell Crowe, Burt Reynolds, Mary McCormack, Ron Eldard and Hank Azaria with cameos by hockey fanatic Mike Myers and Little Richard.
Rob Lowe plays Dean Youngblood, an American who comes to Canada to play Junior A hockey. Cynthia Gibb is the coach's daughter, Patrick Swayze is the helpful veteran and Keanu Reeves is the team's goalie.
The hockey scenes are rather hokey.
Former NHL'er Eric Nesterenko is interesting as Youngblood's father.
The big screen version depicting the exploits of the 1980 Olympic Gold Medal winning U.S. hockey team.
Kurt Russell gives an excellent performance as U.S head coach Herb Brooks. Russell is supported by a fine cast and real hockey players for the on-ice scenes.
This made for TV movie recounts the U.S. hockey team's Gold Medal win over the favoured Russions in the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid. (This story was later retold in the theatrically-released "Miracle".)
Cast includes: Karl Malden (coach Herb Brooks), Steve Guttenberg (goalie Jim Craig) and Andrew Stevens (captain Mike Eruzione).
Michael Moriarty (Law and Order) plays an over-aggressive pro defenseman tried for manslaughter after critically injuring another player.
Meryl Streep made her film debut in this made-for-TV movie.
The tagline for this movie is "The bloodiest fight in NHL history wasn't on the ice" and the film should be required viewing for any of today's locked-out NHL'ers who think they have it rough.
This Canadian-made movie, based on the book of the same name by David Cruise and Alison Griffiths, tells the story of NHL great Ted Lindsay and his efforts to create a player's association in the 1950's. Lindsay was spurred on by the memory of a teammate who died broke because he couldn't access his pension.
Gross Misconduct is the story of former NHL leftwinger Brian "Spinner" Spencer. Directed by Atom Egoyan, the movie is based on the book of the same title by Martin O'Malley.
Spencer's saga is one of a life of violence. (He was shot to death at the age of 39.)
Daniel Kash stars as Brian Spencer. The real Brian Spencer is shown in archival footage.
Art Hindle plays a Toronto Maple Leaf rookie and Trudy Young is his singer girlfriend in this 1971 Canadian-made flick. Many Leafs of the time and former team owner Harold Ballard appear in party scene. Hindle later starred in the popular Canadian-TV drama series- ENG.
Mentioned only because it is the "sequel" to the premier hockey movie. The fact that this movie did not hit the theatres but went "straight to video" says it all.
Cast includes Stephen Baldwin, Jessica Steen and Gary Busey. The popular- but now "long in the tooth" Hanson Brothers are back.
Roy Dupuis gives an outstanding performance as Maurice "Rocket" Richard. Follows the life of the Montreal Canadiens star from when he was a teenager until the year before the Canadiens won five Stanley Cups in a row.
Features appearances by NHL players Mike Ricci, Vincent Lecavalier, Ian Laperierre, Sean Avery, Pascal Dupuis, Stephane Quintal and Phillippe Sauve.
Cast includes Roy Dupuis, Stephen McHattie and Julie LeBreton.
The Hanson Brothers are back, whipping a youth team into shape for their upcoming championships.
Cast includes:Greyston Holt, Jeff Carlson, Steve Carlson, David Hanson and Lynda Boyd. Leslie Nielsen plays the mayor of Charlestown.
Former NHL stars Mark Messier and Doug Gilmour also appear.
A dimwitted bouncer becomes an enforcer for a semi-pro team.
Cast includes Seann William Scott, Jay Barouchel, Alison Pill, Liv Schreiber and Eugene Levy.
Doug "The Thug" Glatt is badly injured in his team's opening game and decides to retire. Doug does not enjoy his new job and trains to return to hockey. He returns and helps the Halifax Highlanders in their run for the playoffs.
Cast includes Seann William Scott, Alison Pill, Marc-Andre Grondin, Liev Schreiber and Wyatt Russell.
